Box Chain Maille

Box chain is a reasonably simple and straightforward weave. The resulting chain is flexible and slightly dimensional. Using colored rings highlights the detailed pattern, and makes the weave easier to learn.

Step 1

Open all rings in all four colors. Keep the rings separate, and keep track of which color is which.

Step 2

Close two color A rings and slide them onto a paper clip. The paper clip will serve as a handle.

Step 3

Slide one Color B jump ring through the two Color A rings and close it.

Step 4

Add a second Color B jump ring through the two Color A rings.

Step 5

Slide one Color C jump ring through the two Color B rings and close it

Step 6

Add a second Color C jump ring through the two Color B rings.

Step 7

Flip the two Color C jump rings back toward the beginning of the chain.

Step 8

Insert one Color D jump ring through the two color C jump rings and close it.

Step 9

Insert a second Color D jump ring through the two color C jump rings and close it.

Step 10

Insert one Color A jump ring through the two Color D jump rings and close it.

Step 11

Insert a second Color A jump ring through the two Color D jump rings and close it.

Step 12

Flip the two Color D jump rings back toward the beginning of the chain.

Step 13

Insert one Color B jump ring through the two Color A jump rings and close it.

Step 14

Insert a second Color B jump ring through the two Color A jump rings and close it.

Step 15

Insert a Color C jump ring through the two color B jump rings and close it.

Step 16

Insert a second Color C jump ring through the two Color B jump rings and closr it.

Step 17

Flip the two Color C jump rings back toward the beginning of the chain.

Step 18

Insert a Color D jump ring through the two Color C jump rings and close it.

Step 19

Insert a second Color D jump ring through the two Color C jump rings.

Step 20

Insert a Color A jump ring through the two color D jump rings and close it.

Step 21

Insert a second Color A jump ring through the two Color D jump rings.

Step 22

Flip the two Color D jump rings back toward the beginning of the chain.

Step 23

Continue to repeat steps 13-22 until the chain reaches the desired length.

Step 24

After adding two Color D rings, add one single jump ring through both of the rings. This jump ring will serve as one half of the clasp.

Step 25

Insert one single jump ring through the S-clasp and through the two Color A rings from the beginning of the chain and close it.

Step 26
