As the name implies, 4-in-1 chain maille is assembled with units of four jump rings joined together with one jump ring.

Step 1

Use two pairs of chain nose pliers to close 60% of the jump rings and open 40%. Open all jump rings so the right side of the ring is toward your body. To learn how to open and close the jump rings (See the Opening and Closing a Jump Ring technique.)

Step 2

Slide four closed jump rings onto one open jump ring (red). Close the jump ring. Arrange the jump rings as shown in the illustration.

Step 3

Slide two closed jump rings on to an open jump ring. Slide the open jump ring through the two top jump rings of the 5 ring unit in the previous step. Close the jump ring. Be certain that the jump ring is positioned in the same direction as the center jump ring of the adjacent unit.

Step 4

Arrange the jump rings on either side into the same position as the previous jump rings.

Step 5

Slide two closed jump rings onto an open jump ring. Attach the open jump ring through the top two closed jump rings of the previous 5 jump ring unit. Close the jump ring.

Step 6

Repeat steps 3-5 until the chain maille is the desired length.

Step 7

To widen the chain maille begin by sliding two closed jump rings onto one open jump ring. Slide the open jump ring through the first and second jump rings along the side of the first unit.

Step 8

Close the jump ring. Arrange the side jump rings into the same position as the jump rings in the adjacent unit.

Step 9

Slide one closed jump ring onto an open jump ring. Slide the open jump ring through the top right jump ring of the previous unit and continue clockwise through the bottom left jump ring of the next unit. Then go up through the top left jump ring. The open jump ring should be going through four closed jump rings. Close the jump ring.

Step 10

Repeat step 9 until reaching the other end of the chain maille. If you wish to make the chain maille wider, repeat steps 7-10.

Step 11

Optional Clasp
To attach a 2 strand clasp, push the two end jump rings of the chain maille upward. Open the jump rings to attach to the loops of the clasp and close the jump rings.

Step 12

Repeat step 11 for the opposite end of the bracelet.

Step 13

Congratulations, you have mastered European 4-in-1 chain maille!
