Half Persian Chain Maille

See the tabs below for all products and tools used in this technique, plus any additional tips that may be helpful to you!

Half Persian is often made using one size of jump rings in two different colors or metals, which also makes it easier to learn the pattern.

Tip 1When the starting Half Persian weave, it is helpful to run a wire through the jump rings until a few steps are completed and the chain pattern is stable.

Step 1

Use two pairs of chain nose pliers to close half of the jump rings and open the remaining half. Open all jump rings so the right side of the jump ring is toward your body.

Step 2

Slide three closed jump rings onto a long piece of scrap wire. Stack the jump rings so the jump ring on the right overlaps the jump ring to its left.

Step 3

Slide one open jump ring (red) through three closed jump rings as shown in the diagram. The jump ring passes through the eye created by the two overlapped jump rings on the left (1 and 2), around the right side of the center jump ring (2), through the middle of the jump ring farthest to the right (3).

Step 4

Slide another closed jump ring onto the wire, stacking it behind the previous jump ring in the same orientation (3). To better show the pattern, the newly-added jump ring in this step will be shown in black in the next diagram. Each time a jump ring is added on the wire, it becomes jump ring 3 in the pattern.

Step 5

Insert an open jump ring through the eye created by the two overlapped jump rings to the left (1 and 2), behind the newly-added jump ring (3), around the right side of the center jump ring (2). The newly-added jump ring (red) stacks on top of the previous jump ring added in the same position (shown in blue). Every time a new open jump ring is added, it attaches through jump rings 1, 2 and 3.

Step 6

Slide another closed jump ring onto the wire (3), stacking it behind the previous jump ring in the same orientation. To better show the pattern, the newly-added jump ring in this step will be shown in black in the next diagram.

Step 7

Insert an open jump ring (red) through the eye created by the two overlapped jump rings (1 and 2) to the left, behind the newly-added jump ring (3), around the right side of the center jump ring (2). The newly-added (red) jump ring stacks on top of the previous jump ring added in the same orientation (blue). Each newly-added jump ring passes through the eye, of the jump rings 1 and 2, behind the right side of the center ring (2) and through the center of the last jump ring (3).

Step 8

Once there are about 5-6 jump rings on the wire, the chain maille is stable enough to be removed from the wire. If stability is an issue, leave the wire in place and follow steps 9-10 instead of sliding a closed jump ring onto the wire.

Step 9

Slide a closed jump ring onto an open jump ring.

Step 10

Insert the open jump ring through the eye of the last two jump rings in the chain maille (1 and 2). Tuck the new closed jump ring (3) behind the previous jump ring (2), bring the open jump ring (red) behind the end jump ring and around the right hand side of the center jump ring (2).

Step 11

Repeat step 10 until the chain maille reaches the desired length.

Step 12

Optional Clasp
To add a clasp to the chain maille, open a jump ring and slide it through the two jump rings on the end of the chain maille. Close the jump ring. The other half of the clasp will attach through this ring.

Step 13

At the other end of the chain maille, add a single open ring through the two end jump rings of the chain maille. Slide a lobster clasp on the jump ring and close the jump ring.

Step 14

Congratulations, you have mastered Half Persian 3-in-1 chain maille!
