Helm Weave Chain Maille

See the tabs below for all products and tools used in this technique, plus any additional tips that may be helpful to you!

Helm or Parallel Weave is a flat chain made with two sizes of jump rings. The small jump rings need to be able to fit easily within the inner diameter of the large jump rings.

Tip 1Use a paperclip or a twist tie to help remember which side of the chain is your working side. It will also give you something to hold onto as you work.

Step 1

Use two pairs of chain nose pliers to close the small jump rings and open the large jump rings. To build the first link of the chain maille, close four small jump rings and open two large jump rings.

Step 2

Slide four small, closed jump rings on to one large open jump ring (shown red). Close the large jump ring. In the next step, the newly-added large jump ring is shown in blue.

Step 3

Add another large jump ring through the four small jump rings. In the next step, the newly added large jump ring is shown in blue.

Step 4

Make a handle on the end by attaching a paperclip or twist tie through two of the small jump rings. Flip the other two small jump rings to the opposite side of the pair of large jump rings.

Step 5

Slide a large open jump ring in between the two previous large rings and bring it around the two small jump rings. Close the jump ring. This large jump ring encircles but does not pass through the two small jump rings. The two previous large jump rings sandwich the newly-added single jump ring, holding it in place. In the next step, the newly-added large jump ring is shown in blue.

Step 6

Slide a large open jump ring through the two small jump rings encircled by the previous jump ring. Add two small closed jump rings and close the large jump ring. Arrange the jump rings so that the newly-added jump ring is behind the single large jump ring that encircles the pair of small jump rings.

Step 7

Repeat step 6 with a second jump ring, but position the new jump ring in front of the single large jump ring that encircles the pair of small jump rings.

Step 8

Repeat steps 5-7 until the chain maille reaches the desired length.

Step 9

Optional Clasp
Add a large open jump ring through both large doubled jump rings on one end of the chain maille.

Step 10

At the other end of the chain maille, add a small jump ring through the end pair of jump rings of the chain maille. Slide a lobster clasp on the jump ring and close the jump ring. The clasp will attach the large single jump ring added to the other end.

Step 11

Congratulations, you have mastered Helm Weave chain maille!
