Kumihimo – Simple 8-Warp Braid with Beads

See the tabs below for all products and tools used in this technique, plus any additional tips that may be helpful to you!

Adding beads to a Kumihimo braid creates a beautiful beaded rope.

Tip 1Multiply your cord by three to get the desired length you want your Kumihimo braid to be. This rule of thumb should accommodate most designs unless you are using larger beads. If using larger beads you'll want to make the length a little longer.

Step 1

Tie eight pieces of cord together with an overhand knot, about one inch from the end of the cords.

Step 2

Place the knot in the center hole, with the long cord ends coming across the top of the disk.

Step 3

Use a big-eye needle to string beads onto each cord. The approximate number of beads per inch of cord is equal to the bead number (eight size 8° beads per inch of finished cord, for example). Wind the beads and cord loosely around a bobbin.

Step 4

Position the bobbins so they hang just below the disk.

Step 5

Divide the cords into pairs, and slide each one into the slots on either side of the dots on the top of the disk. Keep the tension even on all pairs, and try to keep the knot centered in the hole. Slide the bobbin and beads up against the bottom of the disk. Weave 1/4–1/2” of bare cord before you begin to add beads. See steps 5-15 in Kumihimo - Simple 8-Warp Braid Technique.

Step 6

Slide a bead down from the warp at the bottom left, and slide it underneath the adjacent cord. Pull the bottom left warp thread across the disk, and into the
notch on the left of the two warps at the top.

Step 7

Slide a bead on the top right warp thread down into the middle, and position it beneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the right of the single warp at the bottom.

Step 8

Rotate the disk 90° counterclockwise, to position the next pair of warp threads at the top.

Step 9

Slide a bead down from the warp at the bottom left, and slide it underneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the left of the two warps at the top.

Step 10

Slide a bead on the top right warp thread down into the middle, and position it beneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk, sliding it into the notch to the right of the single cord at the bottom.

Step 11

Rotate the disk 90° counterclockwise, to position the next pair of warp threads at the top.

Step 12

Slide a bead down from the warp at the bottom left, and slide it underneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the left of the two warps at the top.

Step 13

Slide a bead on the top right warp thread down into the middle, and position it beneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the right of the single warp at the bottom.

Step 14

Rotate the disk 90° counterclockwise, to position the next pair of warp threads at the top.

Step 15

Slide a bead down from the warp at the bottom left, and slide it underneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the left of the two warps at the top.

Step 16

Slide a bead on the top right warp thread down into the middle, and position it beneath the adjacent cord. Pull the cord across the disk into the notch to the right of the single warp at the bottom.

Step 17

Maintain even tension on all of the warp threads, and the braid forming in the center. Continue to repeat steps 6–16 until the braid reaches the desired length.

Step 18

Weave approximately 1/2 inch of bare woven braid so the ends of the braid match.

Step 19

Tie an overhand knot at the end.

Step 20

Congratulations, you have learned to weave a beaded Kumihimo braid! To attach a clasp see Kumihimo - Clasp Option 1 Technique.
