Weave a bezel of seed beads for any crystal stone, cabochon or other piece without a hole. It’s a beautiful way to incorporate a stone into jewelry without a metal setting.
Round or oval item to bezel (we have used a 12mm crystal rivoli stone)
Size 11 Delicas
Size 15 Japanese seed beads
Thread (we have used FireLine, size D)
Size 12 English Beading Needles
Beading Scissors 1-1/4 in. Blade
Perfect End Thread Burner
For this technique, we are using a size 11 Delica (bead A) and a size 15 Japanese seed bead.
Choose a round or oval item to bezel. For this technique we have chosen a 12mm crystal rivoli stone.
Cut a piece of thread about 6 feet long. Thread the needle. Then begin the bezel by stringing enough Delicas (bead A) to fit around the widest portion of the object to bezel. For this 12mm rivoli, we are stringing 32 Delicas.
Bring the beads down to about 6 inches from the end of the thread. Create a ring by going back through the first bead.
Make sure the ring of beads fits around the widest portion or your stone. If it does not fit, add or subtract beads by two to ensure you have an even number of beads in the ring.
Pass your needle back through all of the beads again and exit from the first bead again.
Begin the peyote stitch by stringing one bead A. Then skip one bead and pass your needle through the next bead.
String one bead A, then skip one bead and pass your needle through the next bead.
Repeat step 8 until you have peyote stitched completely around the original ring of beads. The needle should exit from first bead of the original ring.
"Step up" to the next row by passing your needle through the next outside row bead. You should now have three complete rows of peyote stitch.
To begin bringing the edges of the peyote circle in, creating the front side of the bezel, string one size 15 seed bead (bead B).
Go through the next outer bead.
String one bead B, then go through the next outer bead.
Repeat step 16 until you have completely gone around the circle.
"Step up" to the next row by passing the needle through the first bead B.
Begin one more row of size 15 seed beads. String one bead B.
String one bead B, then repeat steps 18 and 19 until you have completely gone around the circle. One side of the bezel is now complete.
Weave the needle back through the rows of peyote in a step-like fashion until you reach the outer row of Delicas.
The needle should now exit from one of the Delica beads in the first row. Insert the stone or rivoli into the bezel.
Tighten up the bezel like you did on the first side by adding two rows of size 15 seed beads. String one bead B, then go through the next outer bead.
Repeat step 25 until you have completely gone around the circle
"Step up" to the next row by going through the first bead B of the last row.
Add one more row of size 15 seed beads to keep the stone in the bezel. String one bead B. Go through the next size 15 seed bead.
Repeat step 29 until you have gone completely around the circle.
Finish off the thread by weaving the needle through several beads in a step-like fashion.
Cut the thread.
Clean up the ends of your thread, using a Perfect End Thread Burner. Burn, or melt, the end of your thread until the end is no longer visible.
Congratulations! Your stone or rivoli is now bezeled!
