Soutache Cord

Soutache is a narrow, flat braid in a herringbone pattern that can be used as an embellishment in bead embroidery, sewing or quilting projects. In bead embroidery, soutache is typically stacked in layers on its edges instead of laying it flat. The layers are stitched together, often around beads, cabochons and other embellishments, to create intricate patterns and shapes.

The BeadSmith's soutache cord line was designed by a textile jewelry artist for textile jewelry artists with tremendous attention to consistency of width, thickness and drape so that rayon and polyester braid can be successfully combined. Polyester soutache is available in bright colors, and its sheen is slightly duller than that of the rayon. Rayon soutache is a semi-natural fiber – essentially re-processed cotton. It has more sheen and the colors are available in a more muted palette. Textured metallic soutache is a metallized polyester film with a nylon support.
