Straight Fringe

See the tabs below for all products and tools used in this technique, plus any additional tips that may be helpful to you!

Straight fringe adds excellent texture and interest to the edge or bottom of beadwork. There are several different types of fringe. Here we will show a basic, orderly pattern to demonstrate the basics. Although straight fringe can be added to any stitch, here we will show it as an embellishment to basic peyote stitch

Step 1

The thread can be the working thread from creating the beadwork, or a fresh, new thread can be added before starting the straight fringe. Begin with the needle and thread exiting the side of a section of beadwork.

Step 2

String enough beads to make the straight fringe the desired length.

Step 3

Skipping over the last bead strung, pass back through the rest of the beads strung.

Step 4

Pass through the adjacent bead to finish one straight fringe.

Step 5

Exit through the next bead over.

Step 6

Repeat steps 2-5 to create another straight fringe.

Step 7

Continue in the same manner until the desired amount of straight fringe has been added.

Step 8

Straight fringe can be added to any or all rows, and the length can be uniform or varied, depending on what type of embellishment is desired.

Step 9

After completing the straight fringe, weave the thread back through the beadwork to finish off your thread.

Step 10

Continue weaving for a few inches until you reach an edge. Use sharp scissors or a thread burner to trim the thread close to the beadwork.
