The wire gauge measures 34 to 8 gauge wire and sheet metal. The slots are used to measure the gauge. The numbers next to each slot will tell you the gauge in inches, gauge and millimeters.
To measure wire, slide the wire into a slot. In this case the wire fits loosely in the slot so it is not 22 gauge wire.
Slide the wire into a smaller slot. In this case the wire does not fit into the slot so the wire is not 26 gauge.
Slide the wire into a larger slot than the one in step 3. In this case the wire fits into the slot but is a tight fit. This means that our wire is 24 gauge.
To measure sheet metal, slide the sheet metal into a slot. In this case the sheet metal fits loosely in the slot so it is not 18 gauge sheet.
Slide the sheet metal into a smaller slot. In this case the sheet metal does not fit into the slot so it is not 22 gauge sheet.
Slide the sheet metal into a larger slot. In this case the sheet metal fits into the slot and but it is a tight fit. This meansthat our sheet metal is 20 gauge sheet.
