Making a Clasp - Simple Hook Materials
  • 3 inches 18 gauge wire (dead soft Sterling Silver shown)
Tools

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
Step 1
Begin with a 3 inch piece of 18 gauge wire. Grasp the end of the wire with the round nose pliers.
Step 2
Rotate the pliers to form a complete loop. This will be a small loop - use it at the end of your piece of jewelry.
Step 3
Using the base of the round nose pliers, grasp the wire directly above the loop just made.
Step 4 Step 5 Step 6
Step 4
Pull the wire back, down and around the pliers until the wire touches the loop.
Step 5
Use the wire cutters to cut the end of the wire off at about the point when it meets the small loop.
Step 6
Then grasp the end of the wire with the tips of the round nose pliers.
Step 7 Step 8 Step 9
Step 7
Slightly bend the wire back. This will put a soft bend in the wire. This will finish off the hook.
Step 8
Congratulations! You have made a simple hook clasp.
Step 9
To harden the clasp without changing its shape, place the clasp on a steel bench block. Then use a nylon hammer or plastic mallet. Hammer the clasp several times.
Step 10 Step 11
Step 10
To flatten the clasp, place the clasp on a steel bench block. Then use the flat side of a chasing hammer or a brass hammer. Hammer the clasp several times.
Step 11
The clasp will also be hardened as well as being flattened. The loop of the clasp will open up slightly when hammered - close the loop just like you would close a jump ring.
